Review: Amon Amarth – Jomsviking

The tenth studio effort from Amon AmarthJomsviking, was released today to the delight of vikings everywhere.

This album is different from what Amon Amarth fans will expect. No tracks on the album are like “Guardians of Asgaard” or “Cry Of The Blackbirds.”Be prepared for the expansions of their sound, because that’s exactly what Jomsviking delivers.

Jomsviking is a concept album, which is new for Amon Amarth. It tells the story of a viking desperate to win back the love of his crush, after he is sent away for committing murder. Unfortunately, his lady has been promised to someone else – and she seems to want nothing to do with the viking any longer. “First Kill” sets the scene for the story.

“The first man I killed was the earl’s right-hand man
When he came to take her away
I ran his own sword straight through his throat
And then I stood there, watching him fade”

Obviously, Amon Amarth‘s trademark brutal lyrics are still present in Jomsviking, so fans won’t be disappointed. When we hear the female side of the story in “A Dream That Cannot Be” we’re treated to a guest appearance from Doro.

“I feel him near
The boy estranged has now returned
A full grown man, but still I fear that nothing’s changed
He simply does not understand”

How does the saga end? Well, you’ll have to find out!

Overall, this album is a different Amon Amarth, but that shouldn’t scare hardcore fans. They’re still just as brutal. They are expanding their sound with more melodic guitar bits (see the solo in “The Wanderer”), a concept/story, and by adding female vocals. All of that contributes to the perfect cocktail of a modern viking saga.

See the tracklist here:

1. First Kill
2. Wanderer
3. On A Sea Of Blood
4. One Against All
5. Raise Your Horns
6. The Way Of Vikings
7. At Dawn’s First Light
8. One Thousand Burning Arrows
9. Vengeance Is My Name
10. A Dream That Cannot Be
11. Back On Northern Shores

To Valhalla: Last Year’s Tragedy

It’s time to lift another artist you may or may not know to Valhalla!

My awareness of these Kenyan metalheads came in 2012. I featured them on my old podcast, and they’ve been super successful within the Kenyan metal scene. Ladies and gentleman, I give you… Last Year’s Tragedy!

11905776_10153033308552314_4168073362121540174_n

Founded in Nairobi in 2005, these guys have built an insane following in their home country. So insane that they reached even more fans through Facebook!

They call themselves a “post-hardcore/hardcore metal core” band, but the best thing about them is their lyrics. They ooze positivity. Take a look at a bit of “Generation Light” which says,

“Fabrications, imitations, false conclusions, limitations
End these wars
Mend your souls”

They carry that theme of positivity throughout every album they’ve ever done; 6 Hours, the Challenge Accepted EP and their latest effort, Bury Your Fallen Dreams. They love the metal scene. They love it so much, that they’ve organized concerts all throughout Kenya, and are working on one right now.

Check out Last Year’s Tragedy on Facebook, and hear their music here.

Axl Rose: AC/DC frontman?

The latest Axl Rose rumor involves AC/DC. Word spread like wildfire that he would take Brian Johnson‘s place (while he gives his hearing a rest) for the remainder of AC/DC‘s tour. A post leaked the story yesterday.

According to Alternative Nation, Atlanta Radio 100.5 DJ Jason Bailey said,

“This is what I’m being told, Axl was meeting with the AC/DC group, because it’s all but a done deal that Axl will front AC/DC for the 10 remaining shows. All 10, including Atlanta.”

“From what I was told, this was all kind of new inside information to me, Angus is a very black and white guy. He’s like, Brian, for health reasons, can’t continue fronting the band. He was supposed to retire after the last tour, so they wanted to continue going out on the road and continue making music, so if you can’t do it, we appreciate your services, but the show must go on. They’re in town, they were auditioning people for the job, and then they flew Axl in, again, this is from my source.”

Is their truth to any of this? Well, until AC/DC officially announces it – no. Keep in mind, this news comes at the same time that Guns N’ Roses are set to tour with members of their original line-up. WHICH IS HUGE FOR THEM. I doubt, for business and personal reasons, that it makes sense to distract from that in any way, given how excited fans are for the reunion.

What do you think? Should Axl Rose front AC/DC for the remaining dates on their tour?

To Valhalla: Anti-Mortem

It’s a Freya Friday! We’re showing some love, and lifting an artist you may or may not know about to Valhalla! \m/

This week, we’re talking about a metal band called Anti-Mortem from Oklahoma. They could easily be the next Pantera. Their sound reminds me a lot of Dime & Co., Down and Black Label Society. They released their debut album New Southern in 2014. We haven’t heard a whole lot from them since, but they definitely caught my attention.

I first found out about them in November of 2014 at a show in Chicago. They opened for Monster Magnet. If you don’t know them, check out this piece of musical mastery! \m/

When/if they release new music, Anti-Mortem can be found on Facebook and iTunes.

Slipknot and Corey Taylor’s mask are still intact

It appears that Facebook strikes again! Never trust everything you read on the internet folks… unless it’s my blog ofcourse! 😉

A story on an Onion-like metal news website made its way to Facebook this week. It caused some rumors to be spread about the mask of Slipknot‘s Corey Taylor. The summary of the story, is that Corey Taylor‘s mask was “stolen” during a show in New Mexico and he was “forced to perform on stage without it.” Again – this story is funny, but bogus. So calm down Slipknot fans, no one took Corey Taylor‘s mask. In fact, I bet he’s laughing about this right now.

Another Corey Taylor story that got out of hand this week, suggested that he was leaving Slipknot. This story is also bogus. Corey explains, “Well, I do it every two years. I mean, that’s what people forget — I step away from SLIPKNOT to do STONE SOUR all the time. That’s what I was kind of talking about. You know, I was talking about time off and I was talking about giving myself a chance to kind of catch my breath and kind of letting SLIPKNOT take a rest as well.”

Why would we wish the worst!? Why believe any of this? Who knows… but it’s good to know none of it is true.

Brian Johnson ‘Kicked To The Curb’?

According to Jim Breuer, Brian Johnson of AC/DC was “kicked to the curb” after reports surfaced that he’d be unable to complete their current tour.

During an edition of Jim’The Metal in Me podcast, he said he visited with Johnson. “From what I gather, and I don’t have all the information, I only hear certain sides here. He said that he called and let them know, ‘Hey this is what the doctor said, but let’s try to figure this out. Let’s see what’s going on here, I don’t think it’s as bad as he said it is.’ Literally the next day in the press, it was ‘Brian Johnson, tour canceled, he’s losing his hearing.’”

Breuer continued, “Then he’s like, ‘You know what? I would really like to finish and do some shows. I think we can knock this out.’ Then all his luggage that he toured with showed up at his driveway. There’s been no calls. No, ‘How’s your hearing? How’s your health? What’s going on?’”

What do you think is going on? Was Brian Johnson mistreated by AC/DC? I doubt it.
